About Greenbank Masjid

Greenbank Masjid (Easton Islami Darasgah) is a registered charity and Islamic centre in Greenbank, Bristol, following the Hanafi Deobandi tradition. We offer daily prayers, a madrassah, and a range of community and welfare services.

Job Purpose

This is a full-time dual role combining the pastoral and spiritual responsibilities of an Imam with the leadership, teaching and day-to-day management of the Madrassah, with a broadly equal split between the two areas subject to the needs of the organisation. Working closely with the Management Committee, the post holder will play a central role in the growth, wellbeing and ambitions of Greenbank Masjid as a whole.

Imam Duties

  • Lead daily, Jumu'ah, Taraweeh and Janazah prayers and deliver the weekly Khutbah
  • Provide pastoral care, Islamic guidance and support to individuals, families and community members
  • Deliver regular Islamic talks and sermons to the congregation
  • Solemnise Islamic marriages in accordance with the organisation's procedures and support funeral rites
  • Proactively engage with Muslim youth, developing relevant programmes and activities
  • Take an active role in planning, coordinating and leading community events
  • Work with the Management Committee to build relationships with other local masjids, interfaith groups and wider civic organisations
  • Represent Greenbank Masjid and the Muslim community in broader society

Madrassah Head Duties

  • Lead and manage the day-to-day running of the Madrassah
  • Teach Qur'anic Studies, Islamic Studies and Tarbiya to students of varying ages and abilities
  • Take overall responsibility of the Madrassah curriculum
  • Recruit, manage, support and develop the Madrassah teaching team
  • Monitor and assess student progress
  • Ensure safeguarding principles are embedded throughout all Madrassah activities
  • Liaise with parents and carers regarding student progress, attendance and welfare

Person Specification — Essential

  • Right to work in the UK (we are unable to sponsor visas)
  • Aalim — completed Alimiyyah programme or recognised qualification in Islamic Studies
  • Full memorisation of the Qur'an (Hafidh)
  • Specialist knowledge of the Hanafi Deobandi School of Thought
  • Experience in Madrassah management or as a senior teacher
  • Fluency in English — spoken and written
  • Fluency in Arabic — spoken and written

Person Specification — Desirable

  • Fluency in Urdu
  • Postgraduate qualification in Islamic Studies or Education
  • Experience of interfaith work or media engagement
